Wine of the Week: Bird’s Eye View Shiraz-Viognier

Langhorne Creek may be one of the best wine regions you have never heard of, and it is for that reason that this week we celebrate a velvety shiraz-viognier that packs a punch for a very reasonable price at Iceland.

Located on the eastern shores of South Australia, a short skip from Willyaroo and Belvidere, Langohorne Creek is home to some of the most historic wineries in the country with records of wine production that stretch back well over a century.

Unlike Margaret River, Yarra Valley and the nearby Barossa Valley where wines have found their way to UK supermarket shelves in their droves, the remote wineries of the Fleurieu zone are less well known.

But with flourishing wine varieties thriving in the maritime climate, one senses that won’t be the case for long.

A nice introduction to the region can be found with a Bird’s Eye View Shiraz-Viognier bought from Iceland for less than a fiver.

The 2016 wine, which packs a punch at 14.5%, has lifted aromas of dark berry fruits, black pepper and spice. The rich, full flavoured palate combines blackcurrant and a hint of apricot, with smooth velvet tannins.

Outstanding when enjoyed with grilled lamb, burgers, provençal vegetables or beef stew.
