The Weekly Cocktail Recipe: Jack Daniel’s No.7 Sour

One of the oldest, most classic cocktails still enjoyed in 2017, today (25th August) marks National Whiskey Sour Day. The first historical mention of the drink dates back to 1870, published in the Wisconsin newspaper Waukesha Plain Dealer, typically featuring American whiskey, lemon juice and sugar. Unsurprisingly, the recipe has been adapted relentlessly over the past 147 years, with countless whiskey (and other spirits) sour variants now enjoyed worldwide.

The Jack Daniel’s whiskey sour recipe, however, follows the original quite closely – perhaps fittingly, as America’s oldest surviving whiskey brand. The ‘No.7 Sour’ is made with Jack Daniel’s No.7 Tennessee whiskey, fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup, plus an additional egg white and a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters. The drink is shaken, not stirred, then complete with a lemon wedge, juxtaposed to the traditional orange wedge and Maraschino cherry.

Ingredients

50ml Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey

25ml fresh lemon juice

15ml sugar syrup

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Lemon wedge

Method

Pour the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, lemon juice, sugar syrup, Angostura Bitters and egg white into a cocktail shaker and shake.

Add cubed ice to a rock glass.

Strain the liquid from the cocktail shaker into the rock glass and garnish with a lemon wedge.
