Beer of the Week: Lost Pier Brewing Skinny DIPA

Named after Brighton’s famous West Pier, Lost Pier Brewing is a relatively new craft beer producer operating from Chiddinglye Farm in Sussex. Each of the brewery’s eight inventive beers are unpasteurised, unfiltered, vegan and naturally cloudy – canned with an eye-catchingdesigned by Brighton-based artist Mister Phil. According to Lost Pier’s website, the renowned local artist “has managed to capture the West Pier and the seafront in his unique artistic way. His authentic, vibrant, and happy artwork is what Brighton and Lost Pier beers are all about.”

Part of the brewery’s innovative core range, Skinny DIPA is a Double India Pale Ale. Originating on the West Coast of America, Double (or Imperial) India Pale Ale is a comparatively modern style. This relaxed approach generally features high alpha acid hops from the Pacific/Northwest region, which dominate alongside a typically high ABV, due to fermentable sugars. Skinny DIPA is brewed with a blend of American Ekuanot (formerly Equinox), Eureka and Mosaic hops, balanced with moderate use of oats and wheat.

When poured from the can, Skinny DIPA is hazy with a straw complexion and wispy head. On the nose, aromas of resinous pine (typical of Eureka hops), tangerine, grapefruit and tropical savours of papaya and passion fruit are all present, albeit perhaps less decided than is typical of the style. Each of these flavours continue on the palate, joined with light carbonation and a moderate body. A typically profound bitterness prevails almost immediately, rounded with some subtle malt hints that quietly linger on the assertively astringent finish. A fine British take on a contemporary American style.
