Using filtered water, grinding your own beans and buying good quality milk have been revealed as the best ways to make the perfect coffee at home.

According to new research the average Brit will guzzle down 676 cups of coffee a year, with most parting with £303 a year on the caffeinated treat.

But with many of us worrying about the impact disposable coffee cups are having on the environment a drive to brew more coffee at home looks to be on the rise.

Thirty-nine per cent now own a coffee machine at home, and of those who don’t, a third have plans to own one in the future.

Leanne Beswick, coffee machine expert for The Online Electricals Store AO.com, which commissioned the research, said, “We all love that first sip of coffee in the morning, which is why making proper coffee at home is more popular than ever.

“Not only does making coffee on your own machine save you money but technology now means that your home brewed cup can rival your local coffee shops.

“Plus, you don’t have to queue.”
