Femi explains what Labour’s Brexit policy could look like

"A Keir Starmer government will not take us back into the EU. But a Keir Starmer government could take us back effectively into the single market."

Political commentator Femi Oluwole says Sir Keir Starmer is likely to press for a closer relationship with the European Union if he is elected into government at the next election.

The Labour leader has said he will be seeking a closer trading relationship with the EU if Labour manages to wrestle power from the Tories next time out.

He met fellow centre-left leaders in Montreal, Canada, including the country’s prime minister Justin Trudeau.

It comes amid a flurry of overseas engagements before party conference season, with Sir Keir expected to meet French President Emmanuel Macron later this week.

Speaking to The Financial Times, the frontrunner to become the next prime minister said he would be seeking a rewritten Brexit deal.

Labour has long been critical of the deal negotiated by the Conservatives under Boris Johnson, with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement up for review in 2025.

Sir Keir told the paper: “Almost everyone recognises the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal – it’s far too thin.

“As we go into 2025 we will attempt to get a much better deal for the UK.”

Talkin to LBC, Femi said Starmer is likely to push for a closer relationship with Europe which could include re-entry into the single market.
