The Flying Scotsman departed London King’s Cross this morning en route to York on its inaugural run after restoration.

After ten years and £4.2 million spent the loco has been restored to its historic British Rail green and is now running the famous route up the East Coast of Britain – dubbed the ‘route of the Flying Scotsman’ – where it will terminate in York around midday today.

A huge number of spectators turned up to see the departure at King’s Cross.

One man who was guaranteed not to miss the trip is Michael Portillo, who turned up with his copy of Bradshaw’s Flying Scotsman.
