Sometimes it’s important to get away London for a weekend away.
The 56-bedroomed hotel dates back to the 13th century and has an excellent reputation locally for a luxurious stay and excellent food – and we were excited to give it a try.
Situated in Oldmeldrum in rural Aberdeenshire it’s just 15 minutes drive from Aberdeen Airport.
Pulling up in our rental car, we were in awe as we made our way down the long and winding driveway to the main building. The sweeping green grounds and beautiful gardens looked so tranquil.
After checking in by friendly staff, we made our way to our room, which we were told was conveniently situated right above the restaurant.
The Room
We were in awe from the moment we opened the door as we realised this wasn’t your bog standard hotel room.
The room, firstly, was huge with views that spanned across the vast golf course and the pasture which is described by staff as the regular ‘hangout’ of the resident highland cows.
What’s more, the bedroom is situated right in the corner of the main house which meant that it even has its own turret.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, staff at Meldrum House had outdone themselves making us feel welcome.
Two bottles of champagne, along with whiskey from the local distillery Glen Garioch were waiting for us along with some macaroons and fudge.
Knowing that we were spending two nights in the hotel, we opted for room service the first night, enjoying the knowledge that we had everything we could want and need in the room.
The Bar
The following day, we made more of an effort to explore the rest of the hotel.
We had read that the bar was not your usual hotel drinking spot. The hotel itself has history dating back to the 13th century, and the bar being one of it’s oldest features.
Sitting in an 800-year-old ‘cave’ bar felt pretty unique. It’s stone walls and dark lighting feel as if you’re in an old tavern… thankfully with all of the luxuries of the 21st century.
Restaurant
On arrival at our evening meal, we were presented with an exquisite-looking menu.
I started with hand-dived scallops while my partner tried the hot-smoked duck. Both were exquisite.
Given that we were in the region of the world-famous Aberdeen Angus beef, steak was the only plausible option for a main. It did not disappoint.
The meat was succulent and perfectly cooked and came with delicious sides including massive chunky chips, a mouthwatering mushroom and roasted cherry tomatoes.
Overall
We were delighted with out stay at Meldrum House. The rooms were beautifully traditional and exceptionally comfortable.
Exploring just some of the 240 acres of grounds, we were able to spot some of the wildlife that roam freely around the estate, including swans, ducks, trout and even the resident highland cows.
