MPs last night backed the government’s European Union Bill by a massive majority of 384 allowing the Bill to pass through to the next stages in parliament and further towards Prime Minister Theresa May Brexit starting negotiations, as the Labour leadership supported the progress of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Bill for now.
Despite losing the vote by 498 votes to 114 the rebels objected, citing facts, experts and their own consciences. Former frontbencher Labour Wakefield MP Mary Creagh gave this impassioned speech yesterday to explain why for her voting against her party was a matter of “conscience”:
“You did not elect me to make you poorer, destroy your jobs and weaken your public services,” said Creagh, addressing her constituents. “I can no more vote for this than I can vote for this than I vote against my conscience.”
Other MPs delivered memorable and heartfelt speeches over the two day debate, only to be labelled “remoaners” etc by the Brexidiot sections of the press.
Notable mention must be made of Mary Creagh’s fellow Labour MP Neil Coyle, also a passionate critic of leaving the EU on economic grounds. Coyle reminded the House of Commons of former Tory Prime Minister John Major who famously called the stubborn Eurosceptic fringe of the Conservative party “bastards”. The Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark warned of the “economic damage” that “a whole government full of bastards” was now causing to the whole country, before being told off by the Commons Speaker John Bercow and forced to apologise.
114 MPs voted against giving the European Union (Notification of Withdrawl) Bill – which gives Theresa May the power to invoke Article 50 – a second reading. Prime Minister Theresa May will be able to invoke Article 50 and start the two year Brexit negotiations process. 50 SNP MPs objected, 47 Labour, seven Liberal Democrats alongside Tory Ken Clarke and nine others.
