Workers demand answers from Jacob Rees-Mogg as passport production is shipped from his “own back yard”

Workers in Bathford have demanded answers from local MP Jacob Rees-Mogg after the decision was made to ship production of the UK’s new blue passports to Europe.

GMB, the union for De La Rue workers, is demanding Jacob Rees-Mogg stand up for workers at the firm which currently make British passports – from attack by his own Government.

De La Rue which has a manufacturing site at Bathford in Rees-Mogg’s North East Somerset seat, has held the contract to manufacture British passports since 2009.

But yesterday it emerged the new UK passport to be issued after Brexit will be made in France, after the £490 million contract was awarded Franco-Dutch firm Gemalto.

GMB says Rees-Mogg must stand up for constituents against his Government’s decision.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary said: “This is the reality of hard Brexit and it’s in Jacob Rees-Mogg’s back yard.

“He needs to put his money where his mouth is and stand up for jobs that are being sent abroad by his own government.

This is a bizarre decision, and one that completely undermines the rose tinted view of Brexit Rees-Mogg likes to go on about.

“If Brexit is going to work for workers, this is exactly the sort of decision that needs to be made in their interests. The government has to reverse this decision now.”
