A gunman was holed up in a flat surrounded by armed cops after police tried to carry out an arrest warrant earlier today.

Scotland Yard said the man – believed to be armed – ran after police attempted to carry out a search warrant at a flat on the Mayville Estate in Stoke Newington, north London, at 8am.

He was seen on the roof of the block, but managed to re-enter the flat.

A police siege is underway as shocked neighbours reported about a dozen armed police at the scene, including marksman on the roof of the block.

A Scotland Yard spokesaman said: “While in attendance, a man believed to be in possession of a firearm made his way to the roof of the property.

“Officers, including firearm officers, as well as the London Ambulance Service are on scene.

“The man has since come down from the roof and re-entered the property.

“Specialist officers remain in attendance and a cordon is in place while emergency services deal.”

Police said inquiries continue. No one has been injured and no arrests have been made.
