Stephen Hawking and family pay for memorial Easter Lunch for 50 people

A charity laid on a free Easter lunch for 50 people thanks to a donation from the family of Professor Stephen Hawking.

FoodCycle Cambridge – which collects surplus food from businesses in he city – served the three-course meal at Wesley Methodist Church on Sunday.

A note on tables told guests the meal was “a gift from Stephen”, who was laid to rest just the day before.

FoodCycle spokesperson Camilla James said: “We were touched and honoured to receive this generous gift on behalf of Stephen and his family.

“The donation has helped to provide 50 people with an extra special, 3 -course community meal on Easter weekend.

“Our volunteers across the country work hard every week to make these meals happen, and it is wonderful that Stephen Hawking and his family have given their support to our Cambridge project.”

FoodCycle Cambridge normally lays on meals for the needy every Saturday. In 2017 it served 6,300 meals, making use of 9,166kg of unwanted food.
