Wine of the Week: De Bortoli Woodfired Heathcote Sparkling

With autumn encroaching the time to ditch fresh bubbles for deeper shades of claret is almost upon us. But in true British fashion we will not go down without a fight, which is why I’ve picked this sparkling shiraz as a mid-way compromise.

Hailing from from De Bortoli’s 80-hectare Central Victorian Heathcote vineyard in Australia this refreshing sparkling red comes from the same producers that make Noble One, which is a fascinating example of ingenious wine making.

And if it’s something a little out of the ordinary you are looking for, this wine could be just the fix.

With a complex, deep, purple complexity with a lick of sweetness and supple, tongue-caressing texture, this is a real winner for enthusiasts.

Its intense and fine crimson bubbles and richness means it will suit Autumn nights when the temperatures begin to drop, with notes of dark fruits, plums and spice.

Ideal as an aperitif or with food, it particularly suits richer Asian cuisine, such as Cantonese roast duck.
