The first UK trials of a driverless car is seen on the streets of Milton Keynes. See MASONS story MNCAR: The UK's first driverless car hit the streets for the first time yesterday (tues) for trial tests which were deemed a success. The self-driving vehicles were being trialed carrying passengers while the cars operated entirely without human control. The two-seater pods, which are similar to Smart cars in appearance, are versions of the Lutz Pathfinder, the UK's first driverless car. They operate at speeds of up to 15mph without human assistance and follow routes from virtual maps.
You can now fall asleep at the wheel, as driverless cars have arrived on our shores for the first time. Google and Uber are already busy developing this technology and the race to launch the first fully functioning driverless car is hotting up.
The self-drive cars were being trailed for the first time, and they were also carrying human passengers.
The cars looked very similar to Smart cars and it was a great success. However, don’t expect to get anywhere too quickly as they hit a top speed of…15 MPH.
The cars’ UK debut took place in Milton Keynes and the vehicles follow virtual maps and use radar-like systems to ensure they don’t crash into anything or anyone. The University of Oxford Mobile Robotics Group technology powers the navigation and sensor technology.
Business and energy secretary, Greg Clark said: “Today’s first public trials of driverless vehicles in our towns is a ground-breaking moment.
Council leader Mr Peter Marland said: “I am delighted to be representing Milton Keynes, a city that is fast establishing itself as one of the global leaders in transport innovation and smart mobility.
“The world will be watching as we move to the forefront of technology, bringing great benefits to our residents who will be able to use this cheaper, convenient and more environmentally aware mode of transport to make bespoke journeys.”
The next upcoming trials will take place in Coventry, Greenwich and Bristol.
