Scots Back England at Euro 2016

Scottish football fans will be backing England at Euro 2016, according to new research.

More Scotland fans are supporting England than Wales or Northern Ireland at this summer’s tournament in France, which kicks off on Friday. Northern Ireland’s campaign can count on 15 per cent of Scottish football fans’ support, with Wales picking up just eight per cent of the Scottish vote.

Meanwhile 21 per cent of Scots will be backing England, more than the 19 per cent who said they would be taking the more traditional stance of backing ‘anyone that plays against England’, while 34 per cent have decided to ignore the tournament altogether.

Ed Fulton, trading spokesman for Sporting Index, said: “We certainly didn’t expect to find Scottish football fans supporting the auld enemy in great numbers, but our findings show that a surprising 21 per cent plan to back England.

“Of course, there is the traditional support for anyone playing against England, but a third of the Tartan Army are planning to pretend the tournament isn’t happening at all due to Scotland’s absence.”
