The best time to book cheap flights is 42 days before your preferred departure date, according to Opodo.co.uk.

The online travel agency studied thousands of return-flights, departing from the UK to all destinations from November 2016 – October 2017, to work out when travellers can get the best deal on flights. After looking at the average cost of flights month-by-month, six weeks prior to departure was found to be the optimal time to book.

Flights booked around 42 days before preferred departure dates saved customers around 48% less on domestic, short-haul and long-haul flights. The analysis also found that last-minute flights tended to spike seven days before departure.

Opodo also claims the best time to book long-haul flights is in September. However, those looking for domestic routes should book in October for the lowest prices. January is apparently the cheapest month to book short-haul flights.

Purchasing flights on a Sunday are likely to offer the cheapest rates for domestic travel, while long-haul flights are best booked on a Tuesday and Wednesdays are best for short haul.

To make ensure customers are getting the best bang for their buck, Opodo has also introduced a free-to-use an online tool to find the cheapest average airfares from their nearest departure airport depending on the time of year they wish to travel.
