Tory plot to pull UK out of EU Working Time Directive could see 7m UK workers lose rights to paid holidays

Reports of a Tory plot to pull the UK out of the EU Working Time Directive could see 7 million workers in the UK lose rights to paid holidays, GMB has warned today.

Brexit hardliners are today expected to demand Theresa May ditches safeguards post-Brexit which were designed by the EU to protect employees from working excessive hours.

Michael Gove is among the staunch Brexiters wanting Britain to scrap the working time directive which stops staff in most jobs from working more than 48 hours a week on average.

One unnamed minister said scrapping the working time directive “is what taking back control is all about”.

GMB, which represents more than 600,000 workers in the public and private sectors, has today urged the Prime Minister to follow through on Lancaster House and Manifesto promises as Ministers plot fresh attack on rights at work.

In her speech at Lancaster House in January 2017, the Prime Minister said workers’ rights would be “fully protected and maintained” as EU law is translated into domestic rules.

The 2017 Conservative manifesto also promised to ‘enhance workers’ rights.

Losing the protections of the directive could mean 7 million workers could lose rights to paid holidays – 4.7 million of them women, and many on zero-hours or part-time contracts

It could also lead to more workers being forced by bosses to work weeks longer than 48 hours and workers could lose the right to lunch and rest breaks.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary said: “Theresa May pledged to protect rights at work after Brexit. Now she needs to follow through.

“What plotting Tory MPs and Ministers really want is to give more control to bosses and less to workers.

“They want an excuse to scrap laws that limit the number of hours people can work, next up will be trying to remove rights to paid holidays and breaks. I don’t remember Vote Leave putting that on the side of a bus.

“Tory true believers will dress the need for an even more ‘flexible’ labour market as allowing people to earn a few extra quid on overtime, but you know what would help workers earn enough to live on? A proper living wage on secure hours, not having to graft for 60 or 70 hours a week just to pay the bills.

“Brexit cannot and must not be used as a Trojan horse to make work even more insecure – that’s not what people voted for.

“If that is what the Government is planning, the public will not forgive them at the ballot box for breaking their promises.”

Why doesn’t anybody care the anti EU politicians are the biggest liars and hypocrites? Boris Johnson whose family changed their name from the Turkish asylum seeker relative name to sound more British, is either a liar or an idiot. On the same TV show everybody made a fuss because he said Germany never used chemical weapons in wars in his bid to arm extremists in Syria to overthrow Assad, like how Margaret Thatcher’s government were supporting Al Qaeda to overthrow Gaddafi, he said an even bigger lie that nobody seems to have noticed, because he said there wasn’t a vote on the 2nd war against Iraq, when more Tories voted yes to it than other Parties. He either doesn’t know what the party he belongs to does, or it’s an experiment to see if all most people really remember about politics is last Tory propaganda headline they read.
Even the capitalist ex banker Nigel Farage claimed it was about immigration, while he employs his foreign wife on tax payers expenses. At least one media outlet could have pointed out their lies and hypocrisy, or am I the only person in the country with a memory?
It’s because they feel the EU is preventing the few at he top mistreating British people. They don’t want the EU to make them label GM ingredients or allow workers enough breaks. Wonder who will be first person crying on Question Time because they believed them? Nigel Lawson who caused the late 80s recession due to nothing other than Tory mismanagement of economy is speaking in favour of Brexit. Despite Tories making millions unemployed, lying ship building would go over to third world countries when it’s now in rich countries such as Japan and Scandinavia, adding much tax to make anybody suffer who’s just happy to get by without being slave for few at the top, such as constant VAT increases, making 18 year old in bedsit pay same Poll Tax as Lord in a manor, forcing NHS dentists to go private, first government to add tax to household bills after they stole and sold off public owned energy to foreign companies, while giving the rich tax cuts. It all crashed by late 80s, giving them excuse to not put money into what services were left, making them worst in Europe.
From Guardian Newspaper article before Conservatives won election: ‘When the education secretary, Michael Gove, was interviewed by Education Guardian readers before the general election, he flatly denied that the education maintenance allowance (EMA) was for the chop, saying: “Ed Balls keeps saying that we are committed to scrapping the EMA. I have never said this. We won’t.” So it was a surprise to many to hear, in last week’s spending review, that the EMA was to be among the casualties….
Now we’re going to allow them to take away our human rights, replaced with a Conservative Party version, when they would destroy most British lives if it made their tax dodging corporate donors who live in tax havens more money.
