Parts of cruise ships “twice as polluted as Piccadilly Circus”

Parts of cruise ships are twice as polluted as London’s Piccadilly Circus, a Dispatches investigation has revealed.

Areas of a P&O cruise ship were found to be as polluted as the world’s dirtiest cities, especially downwind of the ship’s funnel where sunbathers often lie.

Environmentalists have calculated that cruise ships can emit as much particulate matter as a million cars in one day.

The pollution matches the level you would expect to see in some of the most toxic cities in the world, such as Shanghai and Delhi.

Ships also produce waste called grey water, for which there are no global regulations.
