Gatwick New Favourite In Runway Race

London Gatwick Airport is the new favourite to get an additional runway after pro-Gatwick Sadiq Khan won the London mayoral election and a number of anti-Heathrow MPs were appointed to Theresa May’s cabinet.

Betway has cut odds on Gatwick to 4/7 while Heathrow Airport’s odds of being awarded the right to develop a new runway have lengthened to 5/4.

Justine Greening, MP for Putney and newly appointed education minister is vehemently against Heathrow expansion, as is the MP for Uxbridge and Ruislip and new Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has promised to ‘lie down in front of bulldozers’ to stop a new runway being built.

Betway’s Alan Alger said: “Increasing UK airport capacity is broadly supported by most MPs, but the devil is in the detail and with a razor-thin majority of 12 in the commons, new Prime Minister Theresa May has a very difficult decision to make.

“May’s honeymoon period with her government may be over before it even started. Following the clear-out of a number of well-liked and respected MPs during the reshuffle, the decision to hand a new runway to either Heathrow or Gatwick could split her front and back benches, and see the Tories fighting a by-election before Philip Hammond has even had time to deliver his first budget.”
