Uber Eats cyclist delivering takeaway on motorway

This is the jaw dropping moment an Uber Eats cyclist was spotted pedalling a takeaway along a busy motorway.

Firefighters, who spotted the delivery cyclist, were left speechless after capturing him riding along on the M5 in Oldbury, in the West Midlands.

The overwhelmed firefighters branded the scene as ‘motorway madness’, as they were driving through Oldbury Viaduct, in the West Midlands.

The keen cyclist was seen riding his bike through a busy road work section on the motorway around 11.25am today, when Uber Eats typically starts delivering for the day.

Uber Eats is a takeaway delivery service which offers hundreds of restaurants for customers to choose from.

Uber will deliver to the users doors after they order food from participating restaurants on their website or with a smartphone/tablet application.

Watch Commander Adam Joyce, from Oldbury Fire Station, took to Twitter to highlight his concerns.

He tweeted the picture saying to Uber Eats: “How do you recruit staff who are willing to risk their lives?

“This captured just now [on the] M5 J2 at Oldbury.

“Please educate your riders so that my team and I from Oldbury Fire aren’t lifting a HGV off them. #MotorwayMadness.”

In line with the Highway Code, it is currently illegal for a cyclist to ride on a motorway.

A spokesman for Uber said: “We’re currently investigating this incident.

“The safety of our customers, couriers and the general public is a top priority for Uber Eats.

“All couriers are required to adhere to the Highway Code and any report of a courier breaching road laws can result in being removed from the Uber Eats app.”

Social media users were quick to react to the photo.

Sarah Mallen, on Twitter, said: “What an absolute idiot. On one of the worst stretches of motorway near here too.”

Uber Eats is a partner of Uber which is an app which matches you to a nearby driver to take you wherever you want to go.
