Sick seal pup found in back garden – FOUR miles from sea

A poorly three-week-old seal pup was found in a back garden – FOUR miles from the sea.

The adventurous young sea creature – named Anwar – is believed to have travelled up a drainage ditch while searching for food or water.

It was spotted by the shocked homeowner after they went out to their garden in the morning, and they called the RSPCA.

Alison Charles, manager at the charity’s East Winch Wildlife Centre, said: “The little seal is still very thin and poorly and is currently still being cared for in our isolation unit.

“He is now eating on his own, but he still needs to gain a lot more weight and improve his fitness before we can consider releasing him back to the wild.

“It will be a long road to recovery for him and it may still be a number of weeks, or even months, before we can release him.”

The young sea mammal was found in the village of Terrington St Clements, Norfolk – four miles inland – on December 19.

It is thought to be around three weeks old due to its moulted white coat.

Rescuers said the drainage system it came was only two inches deep, so it must have kept going further down in the hope of finding water or food.

The charity said it was grateful to the homeowner who found the pup, as it was likely to have starved to death without help.
