Politican giant Lord Ashdown is laid to rest after a short illness

Paddy Ashdown has been remembered at a private funeral service in Somerset.

He died aged 77 in December after a short illness suffering from bladder cancer.

Ashdown’s funeral, held in his home village of Norton-sub-Hamdon, was attended by family, friends and former prime minister Sir John Major.

Hundreds of people  watched the service on TV screens from a nearby hall.

Ashdown led the Lib Dems between 1988 and 1999 before standing down from Parliament in 2001  and was the longest-serving leader of the Liberal Democrats of all time.
