The Lottery lottery – The London Economic

In 2016, it’s easier than ever to get involved in the lottery whether that is via your local newsagent or by clicking onto one of the various available online sites.

LotteryAccording to experts on UK lotteries, your odds of winning the UK Lotto’s jackpot stands at 1 in 45,057,474 whilst the chance of winning the Euromillions jackpot is 1 in 116,531,800. To put that into perspective, the chance of you being struck by lightning is just 1 in 79,746. That is a fact that is both disheartening and terrifying for those of us who are inexplicably unlucky.

Despite the odds not being in your favour, there are millions of people around the world who are more than willing to buy a ticket for a few quid, after all, someone does have to win and you do need to be in it to win it. More and more people are turning to the internet to purchase a lottery ticket these days, so we thought we’d take a closer look at online lottery providers and what they offer as an alternative to going down to your local shop to buy your weekly ticket.

Lost tickets, lost millions

How many times have you taken cash out of an ATM or bought something only to lose it? There are plenty of urban myths and real news stories that describe the misfortune of one individual losing their lottery ticket only for someone else to find it and attempt to claim their winnings.

There’s also one story of a woman putting her winning ticket in the wash! This is an almost impossible outcome if using the online option as you simply receive a receipt for your purchase. This cannot be lost or picked up by someone else, so if you get lucky you won’t lose your money.

Unclaimed lottery winnings

Although it’s hard to believe, there are huge amounts of lottery winnings that go unclaimed every year as people either lose their tickets, forget they have one or simply don’t check it. If you choose to play online, there’s no risk of letting your winnings go unclaimed as they are either automatically deposited into your account or you are instantly notified.

[note from the editor: I like the sound of that after falling for the classic ‘recording of last week’s lottery results gag’]

Someone has to win, and you do need to be in it to win it

Most people these days are on their smartphones or desktops at some point during the day, so why not click a few buttons and buy a lottery ticket? Instead of having to go to your local newsagents or supermarket, you just visit your chosen site and it’s done.

No travel expenses or time has to be wasted, plus there’s no chance of running into anyone who may be a little too judgmental for your liking (that’s right, lottery tickets are lumbered with bit of a stigma, but why should you stop having fun?).

Holiday tickets, no problem

Imagine the scenario…   you’ve been using the same numbers for fifteen years but you can’t buy a ticket because you’re on holiday.  Then, your numbers finally come up.  You’ve just missed out on the £10m jackpot!

One of the best aspects of the internet is that we can connect with people all over the world as well as contact your home country if you happen to be somewhere else. One of the benefits of playing the lottery online is that you can often buy a UK-based lottery ticket even if you are not in the country. Plus, you can play other lotteries around the world that have larger jackpots.

Shop around

Did you know that there are various discounts online lottery sites offer? Like most online services and stores, lottery sites are able to offer discounts, offers and bundles to their customers so you get more bang for your buck.  Our advice is to shop around and play safe. Make sure that the site you are using is genuine before you part with any cash or hand over your credit card details.
